Spring DBT Tips for Nurturing Your Mental Health
As the days get longer and nature begins to bloom, spring can be a time of renewal and growth. But for many, the change in seasons can also bring about challenges when it comes to mental health. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers valuable skills that can help you stay grounded and nurture your well-being during this vibrant yet sometimes overwhelming time of year. Invite yourself to take a moment to nourish your body and mind with these DBT-based tips for your mental health this spring:
1. Use Mindfulness to Embrace Change
Use mindfulness to stay present and embrace the changes around you rather than feeling overwhelmed by them. Try to focus on the sensory experiences of spring. Notice the colors, scents, sounds, and textures that come with the season. This can help ground you in the present moment and reduce anxiety.
Tip: Try a simple mindfulness practice each morning, like paying attention to your breath for 5 minutes, or doing a “5-4-3-2-1” grounding exercise (notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste).
2. Practice Radical Acceptance of Seasonal Fluctuations
Not every day in spring will be perfect. Sometimes it rains, or even snows! Sometimes pollen wreaks havoc on our bodies. Sometimes we witness the most beautiful morning dew, and blooming flowers. Whatever it may be radical acceptance encourages us to embrace these things as they are, without judgment.
This mindset can help you reduce feelings of disappointment or frustration, making it easier to adapt to the season.
Tip: When you feel frustrated by the unpredictability of spring, remind yourself: “This is what is happening right now, and I accept it for what it is.”
As a friendly reminder Spring is a time for new beginnings. DBT provides powerful tools to help you navigate this season with mindfulness, balance, and self-care. By practicing these skills, you can enhance your mental health and make the most of this refreshing time of year.
