Sara McCormick, M.A.

Sara McCormick (she/they) is a psychology trainee working towards their doctoral degree in counseling psychology. Sara is supervised by Dr. Elena Zagarskas, Psy.D. Sara has spent the last several years counseling both college students and adult clients. She offers individual and group therapy at BWG. Sara has experience working with a variety of client concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, identity development, and relationship concerns.

Sara’s approach to therapy is rooted in a feminist-multicultural perspective, which for them means acknowledging how culture and societal systems influence individual mental health. Sara views therapy as a collaborative relationship, where client and therapist work together to identify common goals that support the client’s well-being and align with the client’s personal values. Sara uses a variety of therapeutic interventions including values clarification, consciousness raising, cognitive defusion, and various other techniques drawn from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Sara’s professional interests include identity development for LGBTQ+ individuals, trauma and resiliency related to experiences of oppression, and building community support and connection.

Sara received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her master’s in public health from Case Western Reserve University. She received her master’s in counseling psychology from the University of Akron. They are currently enrolled as a fourth-year doctoral student in counseling psychology at the University of Akron.
